how to feed by calories
You may have noticed that we use the term kcalorie and calorie throughout the site, but both terms are interchangeable. Kcal is most often used when referring to dog food calories, and stands for kilocalorie. Read more about kcals.
Calories of each pre-packaged portion are listed on our labels, so you can know how many calories your dog is eating. We recommend feeding 25-30 kcals per pound of your dog’s body weight per day, as an average based on activity level. Adjust food intake for your dog’s needs as necessary. For example, a true working dog that herds cattle will most likely need more than 30 kcals per pound of body weight to accomodate the energy expelled and vice-versa, if a dog has low activity due to physical limitation it may benefit from consuming less kcals since less energy is burned. Use our WILD Phoenix Calorie Calculator to guide you on the quantitiy of food your dog should consume.
Handling and preservation
Refrigerate or freeze food upon arrival. Our formulas last up to 5-7 days in the refrigerator and up to 2 years frozen.
Frozen food may be set in a hot tap bath for about 10 minutes to thaw.
No cooking is necessary, as our formulas are ready-to-eat. Cold food is sometimes more appetizing to picky eaters if warmed in hot tap bath for a few minutes. Some dogs prefer warm food which imitates the body temperature of freshly hunted prey.
Contents contain RAW chicken and bones. Please adhere to the safe handling instructions on the label by washing hands and contact surfaces thoroughly. Although our dog food is manufactured with the same grade of products and brands that you may consume, it is intended ONLY for animal consumption.
no need to mix to switch!
No need to mix WILD Phoenix formulas with your current dog food to switch. There has been no reported physical upset from cold-switching to our formulas. However if you do decide to mix any of our formulas with your current dog food, we recommend contacting that manufacturer to obtain a complete nutrient profile to avoid toxicity issues.
We understand your dog is your baby, and occassionally you may feed them something other than their regular food so we intentionally moderated many of the nutrients to allow food mixing flexibility without fear of toxicity.
